Doi Suthep-Pui NP, Chiang Mai, Thailand
Order : Squamata
Family : Agamidae
Genus : Calotes
Species : Calotes versicolor
Also sometimes called the Oriental Garden Lizard. This guy was hanging out at one of my favourite butterfly sites and I couldn't resist a few shots. He was very timid but I did manage to earn his trust and get close enough with only my 105mm macro lens. As the common name suggests this species is quite variable in appearance and they can change colour. I understand that the red colour on this one means he was looking for a mate.

I wouldn't normally get this close to a wild snake (or a tame one for that matter) but despite being around 1.5m long it somehow didn't seem a threat and showed little interest in me. It was a rather beautiful creature and so I couldn't resist a photo or two. I found out later that it is mildly venomous but harmless to humans and reluctant to bite. "Phew!!"
The only other snake I came across on this trip was a 3 metre long King Cobra. I didn't take a photo of him !!!

Just got back from my latest trip to Thailand. I'm sorry if my posts have been a bit erratic during the past month but the internet there wasn't very good at times. It is going to take a while to sort out all my pics but I hope to start posting more regularly as of next week. It wasn't the best of years for butterflies and other insects as the north of Thailand, like many other places in S-E Asia, are in the grip of a severe drought. There has been very little rain during the winter and many rice paddies are totally dry. Rice is the main or only crop grown by many farmers in northern Thailand and so it must be very hard for them.
As far as the insects were concerned, things started out pretty badly for me but slowly improved as the temperature rose (40C+ by the time I left). I managed to bag some of my target species including a couple of rare ones and so I am reasonably happy even though I really had to work hard to get some of them. All will be revealed in the coming months.
Meanwhile I thought I would share the handsome creature above with you. It's not my usual capture 'from the wild' and of course it's not a native of Thailand but is so beautiful that I thought you might enjoy seeing it. This one is a little less than a metre in length but will eventually grow to 1.5 metres and possibly a bit more. I met it in Chiang Mai and really fell in love with it. I hope you like it too.

Genus : Iguana
Species : Iguana iguana
Something a little different for today. This one is just a 'baby' but is still magnificent both to see and to hold. Despite the name, the species comes in different colours depending on location. The lineage of this one probably originates in Mexico. Captive bred.
