Distributed from northeast India through Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, peninsular Malaysia, parts of Indonesia, and southern China. It is a large butterfly with a wingspan of up to 75mm. Males are easily identifiable with a broad blue or green marginal band on the hind wings. Females do not have this band and are rarely seen, so I was rather pleased to come across this individual although she only allowed me just one shot before she took off. This species is easily disturbed.
Tanaecia julii inhabits rainforest, evergreen and deciduous forest at elevations up to 1800m. Although they spend much of their time high up in the trees the males do sometimes descend to the forest floor where they bask on foliage or more often amongst the leaf litter. They are not known to puddle.

This is another quite rare species about which there appears to be very little known. Although named after the Chiang Mai mountain where it was first described it has also been reportedly seen in Laos and Vietnam. Whether the sightings in these latter two countries can be relied upon I'm not quite sure. It seems strange that they should be so thinly spread over such a wide area.
It is a small skipper and from personal experience it is very skittish, making it difficult to approach. It took me many attempts over a few hours to get close enough to take this photograph. This could of course be why it has not been recorded in more places.
