Stratton Wood, Swindon, Wiltshire, U.K.

Family : Cerambycidae
Subfamily : Lamiinae
Species : Agapanthia villosoviridescens

Agapanthia villosoviridescens is a very distinctive species and measures up to 17mm long. The most striking feature are its 12 segmented antennae which are not only attractive with their black and grey banding but also very long. Laid along the length of the body they reach back well beyond the elytral apex. The head and elytra are covered in black and yellow hairs, from which this beautiful beetle derives it's common name.
Widespread across Europe and reaching as far east as parts of Russia and Central Asia, it is usually found in uncultivated meadows and hedgerows. The host plants are mainly Hogweed (Heracleum sphondylium) and various thistles, but other herbaceous plants such as nettles (Urticae dioica) and Agrimony ( Eupatorium cannabium) are also sometimes used. Eggs, usually just one or two at a time, are laid in a small cavity bitten into the stem of the host plant by the adult female. Once hatched the grub-like larva eats its way into the pith and works its way down to the base of the stem where it eventually pupates. The complete life cycle takes about 12 months and the adults emerge from early May onwards.
To give you an idea of scale the beetle above is clinging to a dead nettle stalk.

All my insect pics are single, handheld shots of live insects.

Many thanks to all of you who continue to view, comment, and favourite my pictures. It really is appreciated and makes all
the times I get stung, bitten, and covered in mud (or worse) worthwhile. Thank you.

Ardeche Plateau, Bidon, Ardeche, France

Family : Buprestidae
Subfamily : Buprestinae
Species : Anthaxia hungarica

This colourful beetle is distributed throughout most of southern Europe stretching as far east as Turkey. Also found at a few places in north Africa. Adults are 7-15mm long and are sexually dimorphic. Whilst the male is usually completely green in colour the female has coppery-red colouration on the head, pronotum, and underside of the body. They fly in full sun during spring and summer and feed on flower pollen.
The larvae are sometimes considered a pest as they bore into the branches and trunks of Quercus sp. . Although they often choose sick or dying trees they can also attack young trees causing their death.
