Also known as the Common Bluet or Northern Bluet.
This species is widespread and common throughout Europe and is one of only two species of damselfly that is also found in North America. It measures up to 33mm in length with a wingspan of around 40mm. Males are predominantly blue in colour with black markings. Females are usually green with large black 'torpedo' markings but the individual above is the more unusual 'blue form'. Adults live for only around 12 days and in that time they must breed. Eggs are laid in plant tissue above or below water and females are able to stay submerged for some time while the male stands guard above.
It is found near all kinds of large ponds and lakes, also slow moving rivers. Flying season is usually between May and September.
