Mae Swai, Chiang Rai, Thailand
Order : Lepidoptera
Family : Hesperiidae
Sub-Family : Hesperiinae
Genus : Lambrix
Species : Lambrix salsala salsala
This is a common species in some locations although I have only ever seen this one individual. It is distributed from India, through Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, southern China, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It is a small skipper with a wingspan of just 23-27mm but is easily recognised by its beautiful chestnut-coloured wings. It flies all year around and is multivoltine.
The species inhabits humid deciduous forest and is one of the few skippers that you will see regularly feeding on flowers. Favourite nectar sources are reported to be Legazpia polygonoides (Linderniaceae) and Stachytarpheta sp. (Verbenaceae). Larval host plants include Bambusa arundinacea, Axonopus compressus, Ottochloa nodosa, and Brachiaria mutica from the Poaceae family.
All my insect pics are single, handheld shots of live insects in wild situations.
