Doi Suthep-Pui NP, Chiang Mai, Thailand
Family: Pieridae
Sub-Family : Pierinae
Species: Delias agostina agostina
A medium size butterfly with a wingspan of 50-60mm. It is distributed from India, through Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and southern China. It is generally not common and is found in forested habitats at altitudes of up to 2800m in some places. It is sexually dimorphic with the upper wing surfaces being much darker in the female than in the male. However, the upper wings are rarely seen as, like most Pieridae species, it closes its wings immediately on landing and only opens them again when it takes off. Both sexes nectar on flowers and males are avid puddlers.
The larval foodplant is not known as far as I know but it could be a Loranthus species like some of the other Delias butterflies.
All my insect pics are single, handheld shots of live insects in wild situations.
