Doi Suthep-Pui NP, Chiang Mai, Thailand
Family : Nymphalidae
Sub-Family : Limenitidinae
Species : Euthalia anosia anosia
Euthalia anosia is distributed from India, through Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, to parts of Malaysia and Indonesia. It is a medium sized butterfly with a wingspan of 50-70mm and is quite uncommon throughout its range. As the name suggests, the colouration of this species is usually a darkish-grey but occasionally they are quite blue like the individual here. It is a forest species that is easily disturbed and can disappear rapidy. Males can sometimes be seen puddling and are a little more approachable while they are feeding. Females are much more secretive and are rarely seen.
Adults are known to feed on the fruits of Melastoma malabathrica (Melastomataceae) , the Black-strawberry tree. The larvae feed on Mangifera indica (Mango) leaves.
NOTE the unusual lime-green colour of the proboscis.
All my insect pics are single, handheld shots of live insects.
