Family : Lycaenidae
Subfamily : Theclinae
Species : Satyrium esculi

A small butterfly with a wingspan of just 30-34mm. It has quite a limited distribution and is found in parts of North Africa through the Iberian Peninsula to parts of Southern France. They are on the wing throughout June and July, very occasionally continuing into August, and are often very common and seen in vast numbers where found.
Habitat is hot, dry scrubland at an altitude of 500-1300m, especially where there are scrub oaks which is the larval foodplant. The young larvae overwinter inside their egg shell.

All my insect pics are single, handheld shots of live insects in wild situations.
