Mae Kampong, Chiang Mai, Thailand
Family : Hesperiidae
Sub-Family : Pyrginae
Species : Pseudocoladenia dan fabia
Distribution of Pseudocoladenia dan is restricted to South and South-East Asia only, namely in India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, China, and Taiwan. It is a small and fast flying skipper with a wingspan of 30-36mm. It is essentially a forest dwelling species and is usually found in well shaded areas near a stream. It is often seen flying erratically around low foliage, occasionally stopping for nectar and sometimes pausing to bask in a patch of sunshine. I have observed males puddling on patches of damp ground and also feeding on bird droppings
Larval foodplants are Achyranthes aspera, Cyathula prostrata (Amaranthaceae<), and Mimosa pudica (Fabaceae). Eggs are laid singly on the upper surface of a leaf on the host plant. It takes 4 days for the egg to hatch and initially the caterpillar is an orangy colour but soon turns greenish as it starts to consume its leaf diet. After 5 instars and 27-29 days it pupates and seven days later the adult emerges
All my insect pics are single, handheld shots of live insects.
