The way Top of Europe has developed these mountain peaks for tourism, the entire mountaintop is hollowed out, with a hotel and restaurant and multimedia theater and observation platform and ice sculpture gallery carved into the interior of the glacier. And don't forget the gift shop.
it seems in this case they discovered after the fact that they had destabilized the mountaintop and needed to put in this extensive array of anchors to hold it all together. I have not been able to find much on these anchors, but here is the page from the geoengineering firm who did them: www.geotest.ch/en/news/engineering-geology/rockface-stabi.... It says, "After a rock fall event west of the restaurant on the Jungfraujoch, it became necessary to secure the rock area around a former spoils tunnel that was previously used to transport excavated material." It was a massive undertaking, with men dangling from ropes and 9-meter anchor rods lifted into place by helicopter.
Now, nobody is coming out and saying, "Oopsie, we broke the mountain," but this is clearly more than an issue around one tunnel mouth. It could represent the need to counter natural weathering, which otherwise would be regularly dropping pieces of the rockface on the tourists on the snow plaza on which we are standing. But then why would they be talking about this spoils tunnel? It seems more likely that the issue with the spoils tunnel is just the tip of the structural iceberg.
