SPA: En mi segunda visita al norte de Chile, la semana pasada, pude recorrer parte del altiplano de Antofagasta. Además de ver numerosas especies de aves que no conocía, pude ver por primera vez (y de cerca!) un par de guanacos y muchas vicuñas, como esta joven de la foto. La vicuña es el camélido más pequeño. Estuvieron al borde de la extinción producto de la caza indiscriminada, pero desde mediados del siglo pasado se han tomado medidas para su conservación.

ENG: On my second visit to northern Chile, last week, I was able to visit part of the Antofagasta high andine areas. Aside to seeing numerous species of birds that I didn't know, I was able to see for the first time (and up close!) a pair of guanacos and many vicuñas, like this young one in the photo. The vicuña is the smallest camelid. They were on the verge of extinction as a result of indiscriminate hunting, but since the middle of the last century measures have been taken for their conservation.

SPA: El copihue, una de las plantas sagradas del pueblo mapuche y flor nacional de Chile, es un arbusto trepador endémico de este país. La extracción indiscriminada de sus flores fue su mayor amenaza, previa a la prohibición de esta actividad en 1971.

ENG: The copihue, one of the sacred plants of the Mapuche people and the national flower of Chile, is a climbing shrub endemic to this country. The indiscriminate extraction of its flowers was its greatest threat, prior to the prohibition of this activity in 1971.
