LARGE SIZE shows the fine details better, if you have time! Thanks, Synapped!

Oh, boy, please bear with me!! 'Tis the season of greys and whites, and this season is going to be a long five or six months. Like last winter, many of my photos will be colourless, except when I visit the Zoo in sheer desperation for some COLOUR! It was -23C with the wind chill factor this morning and it was COLD on my walk. I was supposed to go on a bird walk across the city, but 40 minutes after leaving home, I was still just down the road. Road conditions were atrocious and traffic was barely moving. So, rather than try to reach my original destination, I decided I would go locally and check on "my" Great Horned Owls (saw two of them again, but they were in separate locations). There were so many hungry Chickadees, but I had no seeds with me as you can get a large fine if you are seen feeding these little friendly birds in the parks. Some of these little guys would land on my frozen index finger that was ready to press the shutter button! Chickadees darting in every possible direction are impossible to photograph - this was just a very lucky shot : )! It was grey and gloomy out, really bad for taking photos : )

A young teen clutching a camera said to me yesterday inside the Butterfly House at the Calgary Zoo, "I wish these butterflies would stay still"! There is constant flutter but, on the rare occasion, one will land and be still for a few moments.

Though not my usual kind of photography (wildlife, wildflowers, and so on), the roses I treated myself to have given me lots of pleasure with my camera.

What a beautiful five and a half hours I spent this afternoon at the Calgary Zoo! My day started off at 9:15 a.m. with a birding walk at Inglwood Bird Sanctuary. It had snowed overnight and was snowing heavily for my long drive. Weather was awful, roads were awful, traffic was awful! Our walk was in a winter wonderland, but my photos don't even begin to do it justice! Around noon, I went straight from the Bird Sanctuary to the nearby Zoo and the weather changed to blue sky and sunshine. Headed straight to see the Snowy Owl family - mum, dad, and three of last year's youngsters. This is, of course, dad! I hope no one leaves a comment beneath this photo before I have a chance to say that it was taken in captivity!! I'm typing away frantically here. Yeah, I have a whole pile of photos with COLOUR/COLOR in them, so stay tuned, LOL!

Well, it sure felt wonderful to have temperatures that were not in the -20Cs this afternoon. No lens error messages and no dead batteries because of bitter cold. More importantly, no painfully cold fingers. And BLUE sky!
