Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris), Laguna Seca Ranch, Texas. This species are still fairly common, but populations have been dropping for several decades. The North American Breeding Bird Survey estimated a decline of 62% between 1966 and 1995, but the 1966-2014 survey does not find significant decreases, suggesting that populations may have stabilized, or at least the decline has slowed, since 1995. Painted Buntings are popular cage birds and are often trapped on their wintering grounds and sold illegally.

Green Jay (Cyanocorax yncas), Laguna Seca Ranch, Texas. The South Texas population of Green Jay is unusual in retaining related nonbreeders in family flocks, but without cooperative breeding (i.e., helpers-at-the-nest). Flocks in this region consist of a breeding pair, current year's nestlings, and one year-old non-breeding jays from the previous year's reproductive effort. The Green Jay's range has been expanding in Texas, and populations increased between 1966 and 2015, according to the North American Breeding Bird Survey.

Least Tern (Sternula antillarum), South Padre Island, Texas. Least Tern are widespread and common in places, but its favored nesting habitat is prized for human recreation, residential development, and alteration by water diversion, which interfere with successful nesting in many areas. Least Tern populations declined by about 88% between 1966 and 2015. Least Tern is classified as threatened, endangered, or as a species of concern for most states because of loss of nesting habitat, and the interior population has been federally listed as endangered since 1985.
