I was out practicing on improving my BIF shooting skills at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve when this northern shoveler obliged and glided in and gave me a great frontal view as he hit a perfect landing. This particular image catches him right as he touches down but before he splashes into the pond, giving the appearance of "water-walking,"
The D500, the 300mm PF lens and a 1.4e teleconverter provides an effective reach of 630mm and makes this a killer handholding combo for shooting BIF's.

A squadron (gotta love whoever came up with these group descriptions) of American White Pelicans perform their best choreography while swimming together and herding small fish. I love how the two on the ends seem to be watching each other. The wake caused by their paddling created this really cool contrast with the glass-like surface of the rest of the pond. The weather is finally turning the corner and spring is about here. A sure sign is the return of the yellow-headed blackbirds to the Bird Viewing Preserve. They are colorful, noisy and willing subjects. This one stayed on its reedy perch, allowing me to move around and get that oh so blue water in the background. Thanks, buddy!
The avocets are back as well and are starting to gain their breeding colors.
