I was captivated by this pair of killdeer as they scurried back and forth along the bank of the Arkansas River. This one decided to fan its tail feathers and put on a show!

This little Grebe after catching a minnow (see Pied Billed Grebe I) grabbed a crawfish and started swimming farther out into the river. What I didn't realize until after I reviewed all of the photos in the sequence was that it then proceeded to maneuver the crawfish around in its beak until it had the crawfish's claws isolated and then bit the claws off before swallowing the crawfish. This was obviously not the first time it had caught a crawfish!

I am currently test driving a Nikkor 500mm f4.0 lens to see if it something I want to purchase. I went to the Arkansas River tailwater below Lake Pueblo Dam yesterday to look for birding photo opportunities. This little pied billed grebe put on quite the fishing clinic, at first catching this sucker minnow and then proceeded to catch a crawfish (see Pied Billed Grebe II). There are supposed to be wintering bald eagles in the area but I did not see any this trip. All in all it was quite a morning!

A killdeer pauses from its running around along the banks of the Arkansas River. These birds never seem to stand still for more than a second or two at a time. A real joy to watch and share in their exuberance!
