Unidentified Class50 at Lostwithiel in October 1982. I'm sure someone will be able to identify it? Shortish nameplate I think.

The wooden station building on the up platform has been demolished and the remnants of the Brunel goods shed can just about be glimpsed.

By now you may have realised that I am very fond of Lostwithiel first visited in 1972 and 1977 to 1979 lived in Plymouth. Whenever in the area since always called in.

50040 LEVIATHAN app Truro station in September 1986. Plymouth to Penzance local working.

Names changed in July 1987.

When Hercules was renamed Sir Edward Elgar it never felt right. Similarly when 50040 had it's name changed to Centurion after the withdrawal of 50011, the previous incumbent it was a shame. I believe that the argument if there was one was that HMS Leviathan had not existed for some time.
Any further details or comments welcomed.

An unidentified Class08 shunter sits in the Brunel designed goods shed at Lostwithiel in November 1979. Taken from a passing train.
Photographer: John Vaughan

Just shows that we should always prepare for the unexpected [unless he had prior knowledge of course]. John has been very good at recording the wider scene. The railway scene is more interesting than always going for a close-up

This is the only instance I have seen of anything inside the goods shed. The siding did see some use so locos were obviously present when the need arose.

When the shed was finally removed it was taken to a fledgling preservation scheme in Cornwall. When planning permission for the railway was refused the owner of the timber parts set fire to it. The reality was that it would have taken a huge amount of work to have restored it. But such a shame. There was even a working wooden signal hidden inside to assist with shunting operations.
