Sørvágsvatn, Vágar, Faroe Islands

The floating lake at Sørvágur on the Faroese island of Vágar is one of nature’s great optical illusions. Known as Sørvágsvatn or Leitisvatn by the locals, the lake snakes perilously close to the cliff edge. Those standing on the higher cliffs get the illusion that the lake is floating well above the sea level. The area has a macabre history, however, as the 148m cliff Trælanípa was supposedly the site where the Vikings disposed of unwanted slaves by hurling them into the ocean.
