463 seconds as the clouds picked up by the onshore breeze swirl over the lighthouse, their ghostly fingers trailing and caressing the beams in a balletic dance. 463 seconds for the setting sun to breathe colour into the scene, a myriad of faded yellows and ochre tones wrapping the uprights in its warm embrace. 463 seconds to paint out the unfolding scene in my mind.
And 463 seconds to consider my response to the series of unsolicited comments from the photographer next to me.
Yes, I know there’s an app for calculating exposure length. And I appreciate that guessing an exposure of over 7 minutes is not something that most people would choose to do. And yes, I could have taken a series of much shorter length images from different angles to make the most of the fading light. But I didn’t want to. This is what I had imagined.
And so my response? Nothing. I was far too busy watching the dog which had wandered over and was taking a great interest in his camera bag………I could have told him to move it but that would also have been unsolicited advice and I would have been no better. Right?
But maybe on reflection I should have said something. And maybe I just need to spend more time with real people instead of my camera.
There’s an app for that.
I hope you enjoy the result.
