Common Buckeye (Junonia coenia) underside postures.
Various dates, locations.

When a Buckeye doesn't want to be seen, it tucks its forewing down under the hind wing, as shown on the left. When it wants to startle a potential predator, it can pop that forewing up to reveal a large, realistic eyespot!

Notice the variation between these two individuals. The one on the left has a small eyespot near the tip of the forewing and more spots on the hind wing. The individual on the right has no small eyespots anywhere. Just the one large one. @@

Also notice the one on the right is the late summer form with a reddish blush. I've seen resources refer to this as form rubra, form rosa and "dry season form". :-)
