The Yokohama Kanteibyo temple was founded in 1862 when a Chinese sculptor brought a sculpture of Guan Gong and placed it in a small shrine. The temple was destroyed by an earthquake in 1923, was damaged during the 1945 Allies air attack, struck by lightning and caught fire in 1981, and caught fire again in 1986. Reconstruction began in August 1990 and was completed in April 2000. It is now a major landmark in Yokohama's Chinatown.

Yokohama Chinatown developed when the port of Yokohama became one of the first Japanese ports to be opened to foreign trade in 1859 and has become Japan's largest Chinatown, the main attraction being the many restaurants and food stands. Central Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
