. . . in Haleakalā National Park on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

The drive up to the Visitors Center provided no hint as to the surreal landscape we encountered as we entered the Haleakalā ‘crater’ . . . the ‘moonscape’ was dotted with colourful cinder cones, the result of volcanic vents that had erupted. The scene was a blend of greys, greens and browns with yellow sulfur and red Iron oxide accents.

In 2015 we had such a fantastic walk discovering Lingmoor Fell and following the dry stone wall to Side Pike that we decided to repeat the walk the next year. As we were ascending from the Blea Tarn House the sky was looking ominous . . . just as in the previous year. As we reached the dry stone wall the skies opened up and we sheltered in the same location waiting for the heavy rain shower to pass . . . just as in the previous year. Once the shower passed the dappling light began . . . just as in the previous year. Déjà vu . . .

In this image, just below center, is Side Pike being lit by the morning light, while in the distance on the left is the Oxendale Valley and then The Band. Directly behind The Band, hidden in the low clouds, is Bow Fell. The Mickleden Valley is in the center with the Langdale Fell and Pikes dominating the right of the image, also with a bit of dappling light. Lunch was enjoyed with superb views on Side Pike.

I discovered this image recently on my hard drive waiting patiently to be processed …. well, the wait is over. Best viewed Large (L)

A memorable afternoon and evening at Elgol where conditions were constantly changing as Storm Dudley approached the Isle of Skye. We were treated to ever changing conditions, including a rising tide, nearly gale force winds, grey skies, broken clouds, flat light which was often quickly followed with moments of gorgeous light.

We were a group of 6 togs, known from our adventures in 2020 as the STS, dashing about capturing as many images as we could. Here I decided to capture the incoming tide swirl around the rocks along the Elgol shore. These rocks eventually went under water as the tide rose. In the distance can be seen the snowcapped Cuillins.

I flew from Minnesota to spend a week with 4 friends/togs on a winter holiday on Skye. We even met up with and shot with SkyeWeasel for many of the days.

It was a great day out with friends.

The final location for a day exploring the Yorkshire Dales with Terry Roberts, John Bleakley, Mike Tonge was the lone hawthorn tree at Winskill Stones.

Most of the day had been heavily overcast with a few breaks in the clouds to allow the sunlight through. That was the case here also, a narrow band that appeared to be a break in the clouds . . . we just needed to wait, hoping the sun would pass through it and provide the golden light we hoped for. We were rewarded.

The image does not capture the conditions we encountered. It was not warm and tranquil, but rather bitterly cold with strong chilling winds from our left. When the sun dipped behind the clouds, the golden light vanished and we hastily packed up the gear, headed to the cars and we were off to a pub!!

A great day in the Dales with friends. Looking forward to returning to the Dales soon!!

In addition to memorable sunrises at Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, the moments just before the sun sets are also quite amazing. Just as the sun is dropping below the horizon the last light illuminates ONLY what rises above the valley floor. This image captures the golden light on the West and East Mitten Buttes and also Merrick Butte. Just a few of the foreground brush and rocks are high enough to catch the last light.
