A closer view of the back side this plantation home ( the land side). The mound you see directly in the center is what is left of the English flower garden that was located in the center of the drive..of course being a gardener I asked what significance the mound represented! LOl ....A hurricane a while back took out some of the wonderful Oak trees and the Azaleas suffered and died afterwards..every living thing is dependent on another to survive..there is speculation that wood was placed over the original stone terrace on the upper level .If you look closely you will see the original glass panels in the windows always something I look for in older homes. The lower level was for storage and the servants quarters.making this a 10 thousand square foot home!
Located 12 miles up the Ashley River it is the oldest" unrestored" plantation house located in America, and open to the public.Photographer friendly (no flash).

A recent visit to Charleston blessed me with a trip to Drayton Hall.Just minutes from my daughters home I tried to seize the opportunity to explore this incredible plantation home.I am still unfamiliar with all of the apps for Apple but this will have to serve all as an intro .So much faster than I can type. Will have to learn how to use the dictation features, soooo much to learn!
An article about Drayton Hall is also in the most recent publication of Art and Antiques...please join me in exploring this marvelous Southern treasure!

This view is coming up the drive to Drayton Hall ,the front of the home is on the opposite side facing the Ashley River-Charleston South Carolina.Part of 75 thousand acres previously owned by the Drayton family and their decendents .This home was used as the main office. One of the finest examples of Georgian-Palladian Architecture in America today and the ONLY Plantation left intact along the Ashley River.
Seven generations from the original owner and builder John Drayton to Charles and Frank Drayton who sold it to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1974.
No air-conditioning or electricity ever ! One of the women who frequented this plantation referred to it as "going camping". I personally would go in a heartbeat! Please see previous post for the introduction...
