It was Hallowe'en .... We had finally had some welcome rain....and the storm was clearing. I took my camera out to the ocean to see what I might discover....!! Tripod, neutral density filter, 1/6 second exposure. The ND filter helped tone down the bright sky areas while allowing for exposing the darks. I couldn't see my settings, it was already too dark. So I used a flashlight to navigate. ;0) I love this kind of moody atmosphere of nature that nourishes one deeply. Slight lavender and orange tones lingering from the setting sun, add a touch of warmth.

I got up early to catch this pretty sight. The rising sun lit up the clouds above the village of Mendocino, casting a lovely lavender tone to the scene. Mornings in the village are so quiet; it's like stepping back in time. There are no signal lights, no neon signage, no glaring lights to break the tranquil atmosphere of dawn. Just the sound of the surf breaking on the rugged cliffs nearby. Mendocino is on the on the National Register of Historic Places.

Sorry Flickr friends, haven't been on line much for a couple weeks. It's been a busy time, and just hung a show at Scharffenberger Cellars last week, that will be up through December 4th. www.scharffenbergercellars.com/index.php?q=tastingroom.ph...;

I'm showing macro photos of fall leaves printed on metal, as well as a new selection of Paris photos. Will be back on Flickr again this coming weekend. Have a good week!

Colorful June .... and the soft mysterious fog playing along the edge of the rugged northern California coast by the coastal village of Albion, California.

This Pacific Northwest Maritime climate means that our summers are softened by the mist and fog, creating an everchanging mood that, for visual artists, is an inspiration!

Inland it's hot, on the other hand! Just a few miles away and one is in the dry Mediterranean Climate zone.

California has some of the most varied and numerous species of plants in the world because of all its micro-climates - from the deserts to the grasslands and high altitude Sierras, to the dark ancient Redwood forests and the coastal zones.

These roses were planted by early American settlers who brought their favorite garden varieties with them from the East Coast in the mid-1800's, after the Gold Rush. It rarely freezes along the Pacific here so all kinds of tender plants make it through the winter. Drought tolerant plants are best for the summer because we don't get a drop of rain between June and October. The mist brings welcome moisture.

To help protect life on Earth, we all need to focus and work together to retool our economies and develop new ways to fuel our everyday life activities with energy that is sustainable for the planet. This old homestead is silently decaying alongside the highway, oblivious of the modern cars rushing by. Years ago, homesteaders had built such a nice chimney and lovingly painted this little house red. It is forgotten now, except the fruit trees keep on blossoming!

Rushing by along the highway through Anderson Valley in Mendocino County, on the road that winds through from inland to the Pacific, one can still catch a glimpse of it. Whoosh!

When this little house was built, the highway was a dirt mountain road winding along sheep country and apple orchards across the coastal hills. Before that, it was an old stagecoach road that connected San Francisco and the inland towns to the remote Mendocino Coast.
