And now for a completely different mood: in autumn the ocean off the rugged Mendocino Coast is calm, almost like a lake, and one can see kelp bulbs emerge above the water, indicating the presence of giant kelp forests floating below. Sea otters can float on these thick beds, bobbing up and down with the gentle wave action. The coming evening's deep blue sky is reflecting in the calm ripples. (Another image from my archives.)
