I've always loved beech trees. There's something very comforting and lovely them. I like to feel the air shimmering through layer upon layer of translucent green leaves in spring and take in the musty smell of damp, decaying wood come October. My favourite part of Friston Forest is a young, bright and open plantation, just to the north of West Dean, where this photo was taken.

Friston Forest was planted by the Eastbourne Water Company in 1926 to improve the local rainfall catchment area. Friston Pumping Station draws 15 million litres of water per day from a deep borehole stretching 2.8 miles underneath the southernmost fire break. South East Water own the forest, while the leaseholder, the Forestry Commission, manage the commercial, recreational and ecological aspects of the estate.
