Taking Laverne out for a spin in Portland’s China Town.

This copper framed leg powered BrewCycle the ladies are riding is named Laverne and, yes, there is another BrewCycle called Shirley, also. Both Laverne and Shirley will seat up to 15 passengers each with the third and last BrewCycle, Jimmy Googins, seating only 11. Laverne is the oldest and has been on the road since June of 2011. You can rent her, Shirley, or Jimmy with your friends for a “WeekEND BrewPub Crawl”, Friday’s or Saturday’s, for $25.00 per seat. It’s just $20.00 a seat during their “WeekDAY BrewPub Crawl” which runs Sunday through Thursday. The fee includes your seat, BrewCycle, and a driver. The beer and pedaling is on you.

What happens? There are two routes to choose from: Route A and Route B. Route A: you and your friends will visit Lucky Labrador Brewing Company, Lompoc Tavern, and Bridgeport Brewing. You get to enjoy Old Town Brewing Company, PINTS Brewing Company, and Deschutes Brewery on Route B. Each BrewCycle travels at a whopping speed of 5 mph. You cannot drink alcohol while on board but they do suggest you bring a cooler of water as you will experience quite a workout during this little trip. Yes, all riders must be 21 years or older.

Woo HOO, sign me up!! =) brewcycleportland.com/our-bikes/

One thing I’ve noticed since the collapse of our economy (along with substantial growth in the homeless population) is an increase in street hawking. It is common to see street “vendors” setting-up shop in areas with heavy foot traffic. One of the more popular places is next to the Portland Saturday Market which is held in a city park. Because the PSM is in a city park one must be licensed by the city to sell food or merchandise. The fine for an infraction can be quite steep. Some legitimate market vendors, who pay monthly and daily fees to be in the market, don’t cotton to non-market vendors subtly annexing the market to glean their customers. So, the police are often called to move them along and, in some cases, issue a citation. The angry gentleman in the middle had just been asked to leave the area. He was so incensed he began recording his conversation with the officers on his phone.

I would have preferred it if the dog had been facing the sun rather than his back but when it comes to moments like these you take what you get when you can get it.

No, I didn’t attempt to get a drink afterwards (Although I was thirsty at the time), as there was yet a second dog that drank from the other fountain just before I shot this.
