I drove to Antelope, Oregon, with the notion I'd be photographing an abandoned building. When I explored the grounds, though, I noticed a fresh American flag on the flag pole, up-to-date nets on the basketball rims, new volleyballs and tethers on the Tetherball poles, and working outdoor lights.
There's a common misconception (especially among Oregon photographers) that this historic old school in Antelope is abandoned. Not so! It currently houses municipal offices, and various community functions including the annual harvest dinner event.
Established in 1871 the town of Antelope briefly became City of Rajneesh when it was taken over by followers of the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh from 1981 to 1985. But the name was subsequently restored in 1986 after the collapse of the Rajneesh movement. I lived in Oregon during this time and remember it well. It was quite trying as the entire state population took notice of the ordeal. If you ever get a chance to read about this short period it is an interesting story.
