Il terremoto del Cile del 2010 è stato un evento sismico verificatosi a largo della costa del Maule in Cile il 27 febbraio 2010 alle ore 3:34 locali, (6:34 UTC) con una magnitudo di 8,8 Mw durato per circa tre minuti [2][3]. È stato il più forte terremoto che ha colpito il Cile dal 1960 (9,5 Mw, il più forte mai registrato), e il più forte al mondo dal Maremoto dell'Oceano Indiano del 2004. Il sisma ha liberato un'energia 1.000 volte maggiore rispetto al terremoto di Haiti dello stesso anno[4] ed è stato 30.000 volte più potente del terremoto dell'Aquila del 2009[5].

Le città che maggiormente hanno avvertito la scossa (VIII grado della scala Mercalli, distruttiva) sono state Talcahuano, Arauco, Lota, Chiguayante, Cañete e San Antonio [6]. Nella capitale Santiago del Cile il sisma è stato avvertito con una forza pari al VII grado della scala Mercalli, molto forte. Il sisma è stato anche percepito in molte città argentine come Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza e La Rioja. L'allerta tsunami ha interessato ben 53 paesi. Il presidente Michelle Bachelet ha dichiarato lo "stato di catastrofe". A due giorni dal terremoto sono stati confermati 711 decessi per il sisma. Molte di più risultano invece le persone disperse. Due milioni gli sfollati.

It was the strongest earthquake that struck Chile in 1960 (9.5 mW, the strongest ever recorded), and the strongest in the world since the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. The quake released energy 1,000 times greater than the earthquake in Haiti the same year [4] and was 30,000 times more powerful than the earthquake of 2009 Eagle [5].

The cities that have most felt the shock (VIII grade of Mercalli scale, destructive) were Talcahuano, Arauco, Lota, Chiguayante, Cañete and San Antonio [6]. In the capital, Santiago, Chile, the earthquake was felt with a force equal to the seventh degree of the Mercalli scale, very strong. The quake was also felt in several Argentine cities as Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Mendoza and La Rioja. The tsunami warning has interests far 53 countries. President Michelle Bachelet declared a "state of disaster". Two days after the earthquake have been 711 confirmed deaths from the quake. Many more people are rather scattered. Two million displaced people.
