On my return flight to California, I purposely booked a window seat in the front section of the plane so that I had a good view of the landscape below. I knew there would be some interesting geographical features in the Southwest, and I was not disappointed. When our flight was over Utah Arizona border, I spotted San Juan River down below. It twisted and turned like a snake. But I had no idea where that river confluence in the middle was. As you can see, the smaller branch of the river on the left turns into a wash. The surrounding landscape looks pretty flat and you can even see dotted houses spred all over it. Fascinating, isn't it?

We were lucky that the storm didn;t follow us as we were exiting out of Mesa Verde last Monday. We met some snow and wind. That 's about it. The drive down from the mesa reminded me of the scenery in Iceland last year. Seeing the moody storm in front of us could be quite scary yet fascinating. I managed to capture this shot before we descended into the town of Cortez.

Finally, we got to Mesa Verde yesterday. It was such a long journey from Houston. We stayed in Farmington last night and flew back to the Bay Area from Albuquerque earlier this evening.

I have been wanting to come to his magical place for years. Our journey today was a bit weird in terms of the weather. We pretty much had escaped the bad weather in Southern Colorado after we checked out from our hotel in Durango. When we arrived at Mesa Verde, we met with light snow. By the time, we got to the Four Corner Monument, a strong wind had picked up. We pressed on to Ship Rock and the wind was even stronger along the highway. However, once we reached the tail dikes of Ship Rock, the sky gradually opened up and the wind completely died down. That's why I think this place is truly magical.

Since we didn't have time to go to Chaco Canyon to see the Acestral Pueblo ruins, I decided to make a detour to Aztec ruins instead. For some reasons, my wife had a weird feeling about this place and she refused to follow me to go inside some of the rooms next to this kiva. I found them fascinating. I also have shot some black and white film there. Hopefully it would turn out well.
