It was a cloudy miserable day and there was no activity on the river apart from this row of rowing boats bobbing in the water. Photographed from Richmond Bridge.

This is a close up of the warts on a pumpkin along with a visiting fly. While many people desire a smooth, unblemished pumpkin to carve for Halloween, others love the look of the recently introduced warty pumpkin varieties. No, these aren’t afflicted with some heinous disease; they are actually genetically engineered to create bumpy pumpkin fruit. It is actually natural and not unusual for pumpkins to have bumps, but years of selective breeding have weeded out this natural tendency until what we view as the norm are unblemished pumpkins.

Demijohns, carboys or jimmy johns are large glass vessels that were used for fermenting beverages such as wine, mead, cider, perry and beer. They are generally seen enclosed in wickerwork but here they were just laid out on a brightly patterned towel. The stallholder at the outdoor antiques market told me that he’d found them in an old barn covered in 50 years worth of dirt that he’d spent hours cleaning off.
