A selection of various encaustic tiles set in the floor and probably dating to the Gilbert Scott refurbishment in the 19th Century. They depict Old and New Testament scenes. From top left clockwise: Adoration of the Magi, Flight into Egypt, , Adam & Eve in the Garden of Eden, The Temptation of Adam & Eve.
The Abbey Church of St Peter was built between 1089 and about 1130. The timber roof was destroyed in a fire 900 years ago. The current stone vaulted ceiling was finished in 1242. As is usual, various additions and improvements have been made, right up to the mid 19th Century with a refurbishment by Sir George Gilbert Scott. All this has left a wonderful legacy for the modern visitor.
