I found this guy on the fields and grasslands of Montana. I drove south down MT-191 maybe 15 miles and turned east on a gravel road that led to fields and grazing land. Beyond that, the sage brush reappears, and it was here I found short-eared owls in the early morning. I was driving slowly looking for anything to photograph when I looked to my right and saw this guy perched on a post miles from anywhere. He stared straight at me, and I captured an image of an owl getting cloaked in early morning sunlight.

I found this owl perched on a rock in Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan at the second prairie dog colony. I was panning the colony at eight in the morning when I spotted this bird on a rock. I walked away from the road and into the grass in a big loop, hoping not to spook him while trying to get in front of him. He totally saw me coming nearly immediately, but he stayed put. Sometimes this species will fly away in a second; other times, they can't be bothered.

This is the owl from the previous shot staring at me as I attempt to go the long way round to get in front of him.

While spending a few days on the grasslands of upper Montana, I found this nighthawk roosting on barbed wire several miles down a gravel road away from US-2. While finding dozens of meadowlarks and several longspurs, I suddenly saw this bird on a wire of a different kind. I wonder how comfortable he was. And yes, he remained resting there for quite a while.

I spent a few days in central upper Montana looking for grassland birds. Meadowlarks were the most abundant bird I found, and yet it took me many attempts to capture a proper image of this bird.
