On route home from my morning at Blackmount I decided to return via Inveraray. The castle looked great in the afternoon sun and frost on the grounds so I stopped and shot a few frames.

Blackmount from the snow covered Lochan na h-Achlaise taken on New Years Day 2010.

The forecast was for settled weather but the cloud was low and showed no sign of any change. This was the only shot I took that morning. After packing up here I drove further up the A82 to see if there were any breaks and possibly a photo of the Buachaille but to no avail. I decided to call it a day and turn back so turned my car into a parking spot so that I could turn it around and head for home.

Unfortunately It hadn't occurred to me that only the roads get treated by the gritters and as I entered the downward sloping parking area I immediately realised my mistake. I hadn't meant to drive right in. I was just using it to reverse my car. It was only covered in an inch or two of snow but underneath that snow was solid ice and my car slid all the way down and all the way into the parking area before coming to a halt. I eventually managed to turn the car to face the exit but after several attempts I couldn't get back out onto the road. I now started to panic. There was no-one else around and no other traffic.

Although I had my mobile phone and a good signal I knew I would have a long wait for the AA to come and rescue me. I had the good sense to have put a garden spade in the boot so I thought I might be able to shovel a track out by breaking the ice to create some grip for the tyres so I decided to try that first. Just then a Land Rover driving up the the road slowed down having seen my predicament and stopped to help me. It was two guys on a fishing trip and together with their help we managed to get my car back onto the road. What a relief and I thanked them both their help. After that I got into my car and drove home slowly without stopping.

At first I wasn’t that enamoured with this photo but after a week or so decided to process it and now it’s one of my favourite images of this area. This is a colour image even if it looks like a mono conversion. There’s very little colour in it due to the white snow, low cloud and flat light but I love the textures that the processing has brought out.

Doune Bothy, Loch Lomond

This was very much a "grab shot" while my wife and I were on our way to Skye for a weekend. I've driven up and down the loch side hundreds, probably thousands, of times initially climbing the Munros and more recently on photographic trips but never seen the loch as calm and not just in the occasional bay. The whole length of the loch was almost still providing excellent reflections of the late autumn colour. It was a perfect start to our weekend away. I just had to stop the car and take some photos.
