On Toompea Hill, Tallinn, a potent reminder of early Russian influence, and loved by many, this Orthodox church was completed in 1900, and was at one time scheduled for demolition. It is an impressive structure and the gilt crosses glow in the morning sun.

Patarei Sea Fortress, built circa 1830, by the Russian Empire, to protect the approaches the Saint Petersburg. It later served as a barracks until it was converted into a prison in 1919. It was used by by both Communist and Nazi regimes for detention, torture and execution. This grim building is now shuttered off while its future development is considered.
