Surrounded by marshland, and rivers, the hill rises 15 meters above sea level, enough advantage to have become a Saxon settlement in the first century AD. Over 200 male skeletons, excavated during quarrying suggest that it was also the site of a battle, reputedly between King Edmund's army and invading vikings. Today it has a mystical atmosphere, lonely, with wide views over rivers, dykes, reed beds and pastures, towards the open sea and passing ships.
