ANTHEM OF THE SEAS
is captured travelling up The Solent towards Ryde with the sinking sun behind her. Not a shot I enjoy or practise pointing into the sun as on nearly all cases the results are poor to say the least. However, on this occasion I thought the escaping exhaust fumes coupled with her blue hull might work even though she is some mile and a bit away from me. Will let you judge the result.

SPIRIT OF DISCOVERY
is captured on her first visit to Portsmouth some three years ago on a typically murky British summer’s morning on the final approaches to the harbour entrance. Meanwhile to the right of the SAGA cruise ship, Brittany Ferries Mont St.Michel hurries passed Spitbank fort with the 0800 sailing to Caen leaving the ‘Discovery’ a unhindered berthing at the Commercial port.

VICTORIA OF WIGHT
is caught in a very unusual position with the sun still not that strong, the vessels saloon windows catch the dieing embers of the day as the sun reappears under the cloud line and makes VOW look as if her saloon lighting onboard is about to blow a fuse. Very strange light at this time of year, and dark menancing clouds with a strong bitter north wind! She is seen arriving off of the Gunwharf Terminal in the late afternoon.

VIKING VENUS
is caught in the setting sun with a threatening sky as well as a bitterly and cutting northerly brisk wind gusting down the harbour. The master of the ‘Venus’ has correctly called for assistance to round Fountain lake with the port’s tug Englishman astern (out of sight), and more unusual one of the Naval Base tugs SD Bountiful leading to steady the course direction of the vessel. Bountiful has just released her line with the cruise ship’s bows and can be seen in the shadows to the right of the bows beside HMS Prince of Wales.

80078 was built in Brighton at a cost of £17,364 and entered service in February 1954 with British Railways.

80078 is nominally based at the Mangapps Railway Museum it is regularly on hire to other heritage railways.

The engine is seen here at Harmans Cross on the Swanage Railway way back in 2007. In November 2021 it was reported that the locomotive had been moved back to the Swanage Railway where it operated over the Christmas period before undergoing winter maintenance. It returned to the Mid Norfolk Railway in June 2022.

In 2023 the locomotive was loaned to the Spa Valley Railway where it is expected to be in service until early this year.
