*As the heron is quite far away, more refracted light is introduced between it and the camera. As a result, heat distortion is quite evident as you can see in these two shots.

*Food for Thought: 'The 'AI' cameras.
I have always thought that, at my age, I don't have GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). Thus, I don't regularly change my camera just to keep up with technology. But after I'd taken a number of shots of this heron from a distance, and seeing the resulting cropped images, I honestly began to wonder if I actually had been left with a serious 'I gotta have one of them new cameras' moment.

Many new cameras nowadays have incredible high pixel count sensor, excellent focus tracking technology, high frame rate, and the dynamic range has much better latitude - something unimaginable just a few years ago. This advancement in digital technology has helped to put stunning pictures within ever easier reach. Indeed, more megapixels complemented by the latest powerful editing software means that one can easily edit and significantly crop an image and still come away with an awesome picture.
Just not too long ago, I would never believe that we could take picture from a 'cellphone'. Now, I believe that we'll soon probably see full frame sensor in our phones.

With the present advancement in digital camera technology and editing software, it can be incredibly easy to produce a 'technically perfect' image. I could not even begin to imagine what will future 'AI' cameras be like...what will photography look like. Thoughts?

Just can't resist posting another shot of this beautiful owl I had the privilege of seeing two winters ago.
I located the owl perched high in the tree and in the shade. In my view, shooting straight up at bird perched high in the tree is usually not flattering. I like to catch the more eye level shots; head-on images in which I can focus on the subject's eyes.

For this shot, it meant I had to shoot from a distance. So I added a 1.4X converter to the telephoto lens and found a more favorable vantage point.

I was fortunate that no sooner had I set up than a weak ray of sun broke through the branches. At the same time, a few brave chickadees decided to keep up their pestering on the sleeping owl. Finally got tired of the mobbing and noise, the owl woke up and bobbed its head a few times to look around. In that brief instant, everything came together just right. A Goldilocks moment indeed.

This Barn Swallow family was not so shy and let me come quite close. It was a delight to watch the fast feeding action and how the parents kept selecting different young ones to feed.

Nikon D500 w/ 300mm f4PF + 1.4X (effective focal length: 630mm) @ f8. The light was poor and I had to crank up the ISO to 2500.

In its stillness and quiet intensity says much about the Great Grey owl... I caught her beautiful profile as she sat listening intently for prey burrowing underneath the snow.
