Full moon rising behind the Spinnaker Tower at Portsmouth Harbour.

Ever get the idea for a particular image in your head, and can’t let it go, despite your experiences and common sense suggesting that you are flogging a dead horse?
Well, this is mine.

I’ve wanted to capture a full moon rising behind the viewing deck of the 170 metre tall Spinnaker Tower for the last couple of years. Several planned attempts were cancelled due to cloud cover, and several disappointments as my schoolboy trigonometry failed to calculate correctly the timing of the moon behind the tower. My long suffering pal Dave (Solent Poster) has been dragged over to darkest Gosport on several occasions, all to no avail. Finally, the Hunter’s Moon, looked like it may yield the image I was after. So yet again we found ourselves at Gosport seafront, set up our gear, and waited. The moon rose where I had calculated which was a first in itself (and quite a surprise!), but initially it looked like its path would be too low, however the promenade gave the opportunity to shuffle along it until finally, at long last, the moon was behind the deck. Unfortunately by then we were at the end of blue hour and the huge dynamic range between the bright moon and dim tower was so many stops of light that it rendered the images unusable, so I have had to resort to blending two images from the shoot together. I still want to capture it in a single frame, so sorry Dave, we’ll have to keep trying!
