Its heather in bloom time so DC (Solent Poster) and I embarked on a lengthy drive around the New Forest looking for picturesque lone trees sat amidst lush vistas of purple heather. The plan being that if we found one we would return to it for sunset. As usual our visions didn’t materialise into what we had hoped for, and we found ourselves at sunset approaching time by a rather boring pond. Still this was quite a nice tree so we busied ourselves snapping it as the sun unmajestically set behind an annoying cloud bank.

“Mud, mud, glorious mud
Nothing quite like it for cooling the blood
So follow me follow, down to the hollow
And there let me wallow in glorious mud”

Flanders & Swann, The Hippoppotamus Song

This decaying wreck at Forton Lake, Gosport is only accessible at low tide, so Dave (Solent Poster) and I donned our wellies and attempted to get to it. We really hadn’t reckoned on so much mud. For those that like black, thick, oozing, clinging, quicksand type mud I heartily recommend a trip there. But it was worth it as it’s a really great wreck. However, near impossible to photograph, or at least the way we would wish. So much background junk, no water around it of course, and constantly getting stuck in the mud. We made it back, although somewhat exhausted and a lot dirtier than when we had started.

Really looked best converted to mono but left a little colour in the wreck timbers to give some focus to them.

Panorama of 3 images stitched together of the crazy red sky at Bosham Harbour.

Note: The date taken on says today which is wrong, this was taken several months ago!

The most intense colour I have ever seen in the sky, and I nearly missed it. Solent Poster and I had been photographing sunset at Bosham and on walking back to our cars we noticed this intense red afterglow to the east through the trees, so we quickly drove around the harbour for a better viewpoint. I pulled up as soon as I could see this cloud formation, leapt out and fired off a few shots before the colour faded. Meanwhile Dave had driven further along the road, and in getting his gear out from the back of the car the boot lid had slammed down on his head nearly knocking himself out – landscape photography is dangerous!
