The Uncle worries his niece shows no sign of taking a husband –

‘The uncle and niece had come to a clear understanding on this subject. He might present to her attention anyone whom he might deem worthy to be her suitor, and she might reject the suitor without assigning a reason for her so doing. In this way several had appeared and passed away, like bubbles on a stream.’

Thomas Love Peacock 1785–1866, English satirical novelist, poet, and official of the East India Company.

Frederick Henry Townsend 1868–1920, British illustrator and cartoonist.

Taken from ‘Gryll Grange’, 1st ed. 1861, this ed. 1896, publ. MacMillan and Co., London, by Thomas Love Peacock.

Details of sailing ships of the late 18th century. Rather technical but give a good idea of the end results the builders were working to.

L. to r. – left 22 gun frigate; middle upper, flute ship-rigged; lower, barque, schooner-rigged; right small barque.

Flute or Fluyt, Dutch designed cargo sailing vessel.

Taken from ‘Merchant Sailing Ships, 1775-1815’, 1st ed. 1985, publ. Conway Maritime Press Ltd., London, by David R. MacGregor.
