Buarcos - Figueira da Foz
Portugal

The "new" tidemeter of Buarcos, put in April 2010, called “stick of tide” by the fishermen, is an instrument used to measure the height of the tide, considered an authentic symbol of the fishing village, where it is also known as Medroa, named after the rock that sustains it.

But, about half a century ago, Medroa served not only to measure the height of the tide, but also to distinguish between good and bad swimmers. When the beach was shorter, and the distance to the tidemeter was larger (about 100 meters), only those who could go there and return were considered to be good swimmers. Those who stayed in the tidemeter had to be rescued by boat.

As a kid, I went there a few times when the sea was calm, and I never came back by boat : )
