Technically, these are Crepuscular rays (from the Latin word "crepusculum" meaning twilight), more commonly called sunbeams or God rays. These rays stream through gaps in the clouds. The name comes from their frequent occurrences during the twilight hours. More simply, this is a spectacular Lake Huron sunset off the starboard side of the downbound MV Walter J. McCarthy Jr.
