When on the small, urban park lake last summer, this common loon liked to take over the fishing rights and would aggressively go after red-necked grebes, despite it only being a visitor. I was photographing a red-necked grebe mom and her remaining babe early one morning when they sounded the alarm and quickly swam away. Right at the same time, this loon popped up very close by. It had been swimming fast, just under the surface, towards the grebes, but had been spotted. I was surprised though. I adjusted my focus to get a few shots of the backlit loon before it moved on. The water still had a bit of colour from the rising sun.
