Well, I've mentioned before that the demolition of the old Alaskan Way Viaduct was nearly complete, even on it’s last days. But today that was true. Mostly. There is still on small section on the north end of the old freeway where the demolition crew must work to the schedule of a railroad it overhangs. However, that section is mostly hidden and out of general view.

But back to today. There was one last remaining section of the double-decked portion of the waterfront freeway, and it was about one city block long just about in the middle of where the old highway stood. This tall stub of concrete freeway was left standing to accommodate a Washington State Ferry overpass to allow pedestrians to avoid crossing Alaska Way at surface level. But a new temporary pedestrian bridge opened last week and the demolition of the last remaining core of the stacked motorway could proceed this weekend.

I shot some video today, something I rarely do and am not good at. But video gives a better impression of the dinosauric motion of these concrete-crunching machines. The video here is about 1:10 minutes long. This was taken about 4-5 PM Saturday afternoon.

Later tonight at home, I noticed that the local NBC affiliate, King5, had a live camera feed filming the last stages of the tear down. This link shows their video feed. If you jump to about 1:54:00 into the video you will see this last portion of the highway fall down over about 10-20 seconds several hours after I made my video. All that remained were two tall posts that held up the former roadway. They’re gone now.

“Noc”
(Eng. The Night)

inspired by the poetry of H. Poświatowska (excerpt)
English translation by Marek Lugowski

---

ona była jak ciemne wino
ociekająca światłem noc
ona była jak gorzkie wino
z ust poprzez zęby
spłynęła w zaciśnięte gardło -- noc

(...)

i wszystko było o miłości
i nawet Jimmy przy drzwiach
głuchy Jimmy -- ślepy Jimmy
kołysał głowę w takt

ona była jak mocne wino
w woskowych kroplach -- we łzach
zmierzch głęboki na oczy spłynął
i na usta cieniem siadł

(...)

---

she was like dark wine
a night dripping with light
she was like bitter wine
from the mouth through the teeth
she flowed down the tightened throat -- the night

(...)

and all was about love
and even Jimmy at the door
the deaf Jimmy -- the blind Jimmy
swayed his head to the beat

she was like strong wine
in the wax drops -- in the tears
the deep dusk flowed down on the eyes
and sat as shadow on the lips

(...)
