Duk Duk secret society in East New Britain in PNG, named after Tolai spirits of ancestors, has rituals that are restricted to members only. The members are known in the community but rituals are kept secret, in the past under the death penalty. Duk Duk makes important decisions that affect the community during their various rituals and ceremonies. It is a political, social and religious force. However, it is unknown to what extent this is still happening considering proper government and judicial system are now in place. When we arrived on the Gazelle Peninsula to witness traditional Tolai people Kinavai ceremony, we were only allowed to see as much as the clan was comfortable with. On the photo, Tolai elder and Duk Duk in the background.
