Costa Rica’s Independence Day, celebrated on September 15th, commemorates the independence of Central America from Spain in 1821. The night before the national holiday the ‘faroles’ parade begins with children parading with homemade lanterns symbolizing the original freedom torch. On the morning of September 15th, towns all over the country host parades. School bands march along with school children wearing traditional dresses, dancing to the beat of drums. People line the sidewalks to enjoy the parades with family and friends.i
