According to my friend Stan, this hedge row was planted as a shelter belt to stop the wind erosion of the fields. During the 50's & 60's miles of these rows were put in. Now the big farmers can't get rid of them fast enough, apparently.

The first few days of the trip were relatively warm - around -15C - but the last four days were bitterly cold - sometimes down below -30, with windchills into the -40s. In conditions like that, it can be tough to shoot. While shooting this image, I was so intent on quickly getting a decent composition and staying unfrozen, that I didn't notice (until I looked at the images at home) that there had been three deer crossing the field right in my image.

If you'd like, take a look at my other Prairies images. As well, if you're feeling particularly interested, you can read an essay I wrote for Nathan Wirth's Slices of Silence blog on my feelings of connection to the places I shoot, especially the Prairies.

Grand-duc d'Amérique | Great horned owl | Bubo virginianus

Kronor in an old suitcase, by window light.

The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared
by Jonas Jonasson

A hilarious story where the protagonist climbs out the window on his 100th birthday and gets into all kinds of trouble. Central to the story is a suitcase full of Kronor.
