Scarlet Tanager ~ (Piranga olivacea)

A scarlet tanager forages on the ground in the evening light. This week we had many tanagers migrating through on their way north.

Thanks for visiting!

There is something a bit comical and comforting at the same time in this image. I got it earlier this year when Jody Wells www.flickr.com/photos/134270033@N06 discovered this Northern Shrike at the Saanichton Spit. This image is not meant to be a "Northern Shrike" image, it is an image about nature and resilience of our wildlife. Look at the size of this bird in relation to its environment.... things are falling apart but birds strive and it is comforting to know this, however we need to continue to care. I have a bluebird picture perched in a similar fashion that I will share on another HFF. Hope you all have a great weekend with great photo opportunities.

Grand View Point, Canyonlands National Park, Utah

Standing at Grand View Point on the Island in the Sky, we look down on the Needles District of the park, specifically Monument Basin below us. The Abajo Mountains are on the horizon to the right.

Monument Basin is a series of side canyons of the Colorado River. The pinnacles within the basin are of river deposited Organ Rock Formation from the Permian era. White Rim Sandstone, a wind deposited sandstone, acts as a capstone layer for the softer pinnacles and the edges of the basin. The spidery jeep trail skirting the edges is the White Rim Trail.

The drop from our location is roughly 500 meters (1600 feet) to the plain below. It is not a straight drop; the Island in the Sky is surrounded by huge talus slopes.
