I'll be there
Like a bird, singing to you
I'll be there
Like a bird, singing you through
I'll be there, I'll be there
Holding the light for you
Making it right for you
Singing you through

"Here was a Royal Fellowship of Death" - Shakespeare's "Henry V”
On Explore, March 1st (1)

The "Recumbent Artilleryman" is part of Charles Sargeant Jagger's 1925 Royal Artillery Memorial. A World War I monument which both honors the dead and vividly evokes the conflict. The frankness of "Recumbent Artilleryman" came as a shock as Mr. Jagger rejected common euphemisms, such as the figure borne by angels, opting instead for the most baldly and boldly factual depiction of death seen in a public monument up to that time. Mr. Jagger adopts a naturalistic style no doubt informed by his own war experiences in the Gallipoli debacle. Rather than being icons or generic types, his figures read as flesh-and-blood individuals who have just come off the battlefield.

The "Recumbent Artilleryman" is one of the 4 figures in the Royal Artillery Memorial, a stone monument at Hyde Park Corner in London, dedicated to casualties in the Royal Regiment of Artillery in the First World War. The memorial was designed by Charles Jagger and Lionel Pearson, and features a giant sculpture of a BL 9.2 inch Mk I howitzer upon a large plinth of Portland stone, with stone reliefs depicting scenes from the conflict. Four bronze figures of artillery men are positioned around the outside of the memorial. The memorial is famous for its realist contrast with other First World War memorials, such as the Cenotaph designed by Edwin Lutyens, and attracted much public debate during the 20th century.
